Itinerary

Day 1: Introduction

On Day 1, we will meet up at the Desert Shade Eco Camp on Friday at 14:00, where we’ll confirm your registration and get a short run-through of the tour plan for the next 3 days. After that we’ll head out on a short hike to the rim of the Ramon Crater, where we’ll observe this geological desert phenomenon and hear an introduction to the area.

Day 2: Mount Karkom (the Mountain of Revelation)

Har Karkom, in the southwest of the Negev Desert in Israel, is believed by some to be the biblical Mt. Sinai. Almost 40,000 rock engravings, flint stone tools and other materials were discovered around the mountain, adding substance to that theory. Geographically, its location is also on the suggested route of the Children of Israel in the Exodus from Egypt.

Day 2 of our tour includes exploration of this historical mountain, as well as the following:

  • Meet your guide and group

  • Head off on the jeep safari to the southwest Negev Desert to Har Karkom (Har is Mount in Hebrew), which is believed to be the biblical Mount Sinai

  • Explore the supposed route of the Children of Israel on their Exodus from Egypt

  • Venture through the stunning Paran Desert

Day 3: The Spice Route and Paran Desert Canyons

Frankincense and myrrh were aromatic scents used in ancient times as incense in worship, essential oils and perfumes, and were the secret source of the Nabataean community’s wealth. The Nabataean community chose a hidden, inhospitable desert route in order to maintain their position as the sole providers of these precious scents - a route we will follow, and a route which was also declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

Day 3 of our desert adventure will be a full day of jeep touring and hiking, and includes the following:

  • Explore the deadly trails the Nabataeans used to transit frankincense and myrrh

  • Visit the magnificent Arava Valley

  • Take a scenic drive through the dry river bed of Paran

  • Take an exciting climb up the Barak Canyon using ropes and ladders

  • Return to Mitzpe Ramon in time for one of its legendary sunsets

.

Day 4: Ramon Crater

The Ramon Crater, or Maktesh Ramon as it is officially known, is the largest erosive crater in the world. Visiting the crater and its surroundings reveals amazing geological layers with unique and natural beauty. On Day 4 of this tour you will have the opportunity to encounter the vegetation and geological phenomena that make this area so unique as well as to appreciate the magnificent natural beauty of the Maktesh. Day 4 includes the following:

  • Start the day from the beautiful Camel Lookout point, loved by locals and tourists alike!

  • Hop in the jeep for a drive along the trails of the Northern Ramon ridge and the upper Zin valley

  • Gain a new understanding of how biblical and Byzantine settlers succeeded in developing amazing agriculture despite the harsh desert climate

  • Descend to the lowest base layers of the crater formed in the Jurassic era

  • Continue the jeep tour to the beautiful Saharonim spring and the ancient Nabataea Khan

  • Enjoy a well-deserved coffee break in one of the most beautiful spots of the Nekarot Canyon, a dry riverbed

  • The jeep tour will continue through Wadi Ardon, where you will be able to see dykes, a wonderful geological phenomenon

  • Discover the world of desert plants and animals under the shade of an incredible acacia tree

  • The last stop of the jeep safari is where you will have a 360 degree view of the Crater from the top of Mount Gvanim; this is truly a spectacular view that will offer you a whole new perspective of the Crater!
